alls 2 1 in International Hockey League Battle a TUESDAY DECEMBER 3 1929 Capt Gatewood manager of the United States Salvage Associa tion of New York was host yester day to representatives of the Great Lakes shipping interest with head quarters here at a lunch in Hotel Statler when he said he would recommend that an office of his com pany be opened in Cleveland 8 He outlined the purposes of the association and explained that it was set up in the interest of American underwriters owners and repair in terests for the purpose of survey and appraisal of the hulls and engines of American vessels and operated for these interests in the same way the London Salvage Association has operated for many years in the in terest of corresponding English un derwriters and owners He stated that the personnel of the association was composed of care fully selected highly qualified and experienced men technically equipped to handle the exacting work of ship surveying and that they were possessed of good judgment and a thorough knowledge of the business of ship surveying and repairing Capt Gatewood said that the work handled for American underwriters in the past by Parry Jones had met with the general approval of the entire marine insurance world but that the interests of the American Insurance companies were now so heavy and were growing heavier that they warranted a more direct repre sentation on the Great Lakes He stated that an office would be recom mended in Cleveland to provide this representation and that it was pos sible that a moderate expansion of activities might be made later in one or two other ports The survey work for the underwriters in the past had been hanlded by Perry Jones by the surveyors of the American Bureau of Shipping and this will continue to be the case in the great majority of lake ports in view of the satisfactory service rendered Myers in Charge Here It Is the desire of the Great Lakes Syndicate of underwriters represent ing American companies to provide a minimum of representation with the view of the lowest possible overhead cost and to this end if the Cleveland office is established will probably be the only Independent office for the present It Is hoped to have it in operation for the season opening next April Guy Myers representa tive of the association at Galveston Tex will probably be in charge here Capt Gatewood
