Naruto's Guardian(Remake) - Chapter Nine: You're not ninjas yet (2024)

As Kakashi vanished into thin air, leaving behind a trail of intrigue, Team 7 exchanged bewildered glances, their curiosity piqued by his cryptic instructions. With a shared sense of uncertainty, Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke, and Aoi rose from their seats and made their way to the designated meeting spot atop the Academy.

Ascending the stairs to the rooftop, the trio and their loyal companion found themselves bathed in the warm glow of the afternoon sun. Its rays cast long, dramatic shadows across the weathered concrete surface as they approached Kakashi, who stood casually leaning against the grey, rusty railing, arms folded in a relaxed posture.

Despite the uncertainty of their situation, there was an air of anticipation among the group, mingled with a hint of excitement for whatever lay ahead.

"Alright, I'd say introductions are in order, so if you will..."

The three kids were dumbfounded by their new sensei once again as they sat down. They starred at him, unable to speak until they collectively thought the same thing.

"What should we say?"

Kakashi shrug his shoulders at their inability to do anything on their own without clear instructions.

"For example your names, eh? Then perhaps your likes, dislikes, hobbies, dreams, goals"

"Why won't you go first, we know nothing about you, not even your name"

He sighed. The years he spent in ANBU where teammates are not close to each other and don't even know each other's real identities marked him. If it was up to him, he'd still be living in secrecy, leading him ANBU team, but now he has to go on mundane missions with kids and a potentially ticking bomb clad in black fur. Such was Hokage's order however, so he has to abide by it and at least he gets to slack off while still getting paid.

"Alright, my name is Hatake Kakashi, I like....a few things yeah, I also dislike some things...my hobbies, well I'm not telling you that....dreams...I guess I have some, same with goals"

All the trio learned was their sensei's name in the end and such was the start of their journey as shinobi. Their first impression of him couldn't be worse.

"Now it's your turn, let's start with...you the orange one"

Naruto got startled by getting called out first, but quickly shook off the feeling and started the only relatively normal introduction of the group.

"My name is Uzumaki Naruto, I like my friend Aoi..." excitedly he hugged Aoi, pulling him closer and rubbing his face in his fur, much to the wolf's delight, who immediately jumped up and started hopping around the boy, giving him hundreds of kisses. "...I also like ramen, I hate the three minutes you have to wait after you pour water into the ramen cup... ah but the ramen at Ichiraku is the best, my hobby is collecting and trying different ramen flavours, my goal is to be the strongest Hokage ever and have the village acknowledge me"

"Introduce Aoi too"

"Ah! Right! So this is Aoi, Old man Hokage brought him over one day, he was abandoned by his family or something I think, he loves grilled chicken meat and hates milk, his hobby is hunting in the forest and running around exploring every part of the village, Im not sure if he has any dreams of goals...can't really ask him"

"Thank you, next you, pink girl"

"I'm Sakura Haruno. What I like... I mean, who I like is... And, my hobby is, I mean... My future dream is..."

The whole time, she kept crazily glancing at Sasuke, who paid her no mind. Everything she said...well, didn't say, was related to Sasuke. Aoi hated her voice so much, the whole time she was talking, he had his ears flat down, just so he could hear her as little as possible.

"And? What about your dislikes?"

"Naruto!"

The air filled with tension as Aoi decided to remind Sakura of his presence and the fact that he understands what she says. His low growls were but a warning, for now. He picked up on the sudden shift in the mood and became aware of the danger it meant to have these four in one team. Their unique dynamic was promising, however very volatile. And all of it connected to Aoi, who did not respond well to anything negative related to Naruto. Kakashi was made well aware of Aoi's circ*mstances by the Hokage. His family was found decaying in a ditch in Orochimaru's hideout. He was the only survivor and was found on an operating table in his laboratory. Everything he experienced before being rescued must have been so traumatising, hence why he is so protective of Naruto, the first human to treat him with love and care. All Kakashi could hope for was that they didn't invite danger into the village with their decision to take the wolf in. Who knows what Orochimaru did to the animal before they found him. They have no way of knowing, because records related to Aoi were one of the things Orochimaru took with him when he fled.

"Alright, your turn" Kakashi pulled himself out of his thoughts and looked at Sasuke, wanting to end the introductions and go read his book for the 100th time, it's plot never got boring.

"My name's... Sasuke Uchiha, I have lots of dislikes, but no likes in particular. Oh...And...I don't feel like summing up my ambition as just a dream but I do have an ambition! The ambition to restore my clan and without fail...to k*ll a certain man"

Naruto went pale and panicked inside his mind, hoping Sasuke didn't mean to kill him. Silence and awkwardness filled the afternoon air as the young man's heavy words were processed by his listeners. Sakura was smitten by how cool he was and Kakashi felt pity towards the boy as he was hell bent on walking the path of revenge, which never has a happy ending.

"Alright you're all different and interesting, which will be good, we'll have our first mission tomorrow"

The word 'mission' immediately pulled everyone's attention, especially Naruto's, who impatiently started asking about the mission.

"What kind of mission?

"Something easy to start with"

"What, what, what!"

"A survival exercise"

The three were once again confused. Why would they be doing a survival exercise instead of a normal mission? They've had plenty of exercises at the academy and were eager to get their shinobi career started.

"This will be no simple exercise"

"Then... then what kind of exercise is it?"

Kakashi chuckled sad*stically, this was his favourite part to tell the kids he was assigned to every time the Hokage tried to get him to lead Genin kids.

"Hey! What's so funny, Sensei?"

"Uh, well, if I tell you, I know you'll be surprised"

"What?"

"Out of the twenty seven graduates, only nine will be recognized as junior ninjas. The remaining eighteen will be sent back to the Academy. In other words, this exercise is an extremely difficult test with a failure rate of 66% or higher!"

Their jaws dropped almost to the floor with each word he said. They worked so hard to get this far and now he was telling them they were yet to become ninjas.

"See, see? You got are surprised" He laughed out loud, amazed by their baffled expressions.

"That's crazy!

"T-Then, what was the graduation test for?"

"Oh, that. It was just to select those who have the potential of becoming Genin"

Kakashi was right. Kids graduate the academy full of naivety and expectations only to die by the hands of foreign ninjas. They needed to send back those that were not ready, or they would just became another names on the KIA stone.

"Whaaaat?!"

"Well, that's the way it is. I'll be determining whether you pass or fail. Bring your complete set of Ninja tools! We meet at five in the morning...Oh and...do the eat breakfast, you'll throw up"

And just like that he vanished into thin air, leaving them with only the ominous warning.
