In 1961, the firm studied consumers' reactions to brand-recognition labels for bananas. A 1928 graduate of West Philadelphia High School, Mr. Wood married Johanna Cutler in 1937 and raised three children in Me-rion.

She died in 1977. In 1977, Mr. Wood handed over management of his company to sons David and Peter, who ran it until it was sold in 1985. Mr. Wood then focused his energies on Dropsie College, as the Judaic studies center was then known.

At the time, it was located at Broad and York Streets in North Philadelphia and was foundering. When Mr. Wood was named board chairman in 1983, James L. Coolbaugh Video-store owner, 63 James L. Coolbaugh, 63, a drug agent in Colombia in the 1970s who eventually moved to Philadelphia and in 1978 opened one of the first video-rental stores in the area, died last Friday of liver failure at home in Haver-town.

The son of a geo-physicist, Mr. Coolbaugh grew up in Colorado, Nebraska and Burma. He enlisted in the Marines in 1962 and served two tours James L. Coolbaugh in Vietnam. He saw action in some of the earliest and heaviest combat missions before being discharged in 1966 as a sergeant.

Mr. Coolbaugh earned a bachelor's in journalism in 1972 from California State University at Hayward. He worked for one year as a reporter for the Andean Times in Caracas, Venezuela. Beginning in 1973, he was a field agent for the Colombian government, his family said. He identified smugglers and infiltrated covert narcotics operations before escaping the growing violence of the drug trade in 1978.

Mr. Coolbaugh moved to Philadelphia and started one of the region's first video-rental stores, Video Palace at 18th and Walnut Streets, which he operated for two years, his family said. In 1980, he closed his Center City store and opened Video Den in Havertown, his family said. When the large video chains came to the suburbs, Mr. Coolbaugh could not compete and closed his store in 1994.

He worked in sales for a beverage company and an auto parts dealer until he became ill two years ago, his family said. Mr. Coolbaugh married Susan Brown in 1980. They divorced in 1984. He married Cheryl Lawson in 1987, and they raised a daughter in Havertown.

In addition to his wife and former wife, Mr. Coolbaugh is survived by his daughter, Cailin; father, David; and two sisters. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1141 West Chester Pike, Havertown. Burial was private.
