We’ve got the NHL postseason in full swing and it brings us a pair of Western Conference squads on the ice as they square off in Western Canada in a winner-take-all all matchup. The Edmonton Oilers are on the road as they play Game 7 of their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series with the Vancouver Canucks Monday night. It’s all on the line here as the winner moves on to face Dallas in the Western Conference Finals while the loser goes home.

Vancouver took the opening game of this series, rallying from a three-goal deficit to down Edmonton 5-4 to draw first blood in the series. Edmonton rallied in Game 2 to win 4-3 in overtime Friday night to square the series at one game apiece. After the series moved to Edmonton, Vancouver jumped in front early and hung on for a 4-3 win to take a 2-1 series lead while stealing home-ice advantage back. In a critical Game 4, Edmonton regrouped after blowing a two-goal third-period lead to prevail 3-2 and even things up. Vancouver won Game 5 3-2 at home Thursday night before the Oilers responded with a 5-1 home win in Game 6 to force this decisive Game 7. Which team moves on and who’s done for the year?

In the postseason, the Oilers have won both previous series between the teams. Edmonton owns a 9-5 advantage in head-to-head playoff wins, including a six-game series win in the most recent playoff matchup in the 1992 Smythe Division finals.

Edmonton Oilers Looking to Reach Conference Finals

Edmonton, with their backs to the wall, put together a solid all-around game to pick up the win in Game 6, forcing this Game 7 on the road. The Oilers hope to be the first team to win back-to-back games in the series here. Edmonton comes into this one tied for 1st in the league in goals per game as they average 3.91 goals per contest in the postseason. The Oilers stand 9th in goals against as they allow 2.82 goals per night. Edmonton stands 1st in power play success as they cash in 36.8% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Oilers are 1st in penalty killing as they successfully get through 90.6% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

In Game 6, Edmonton’s offense got into gear with their best showing of the series to even things up and force Game 7. The Oilers saw the shots even at four in the opening period and they skated off tied at one on the scoreboard at the first intermission. Dylan Holloway opened the scoring with his third goal of the playoffs at 8:18 off assists from Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard. They gave up the tying goal only 1:45 later. In the second period, Edmonton owned a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal and outscored Vancouver 2-0 to take a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Zach Hyman gave the Oilers the lead for good with his 10th goal of the year at 7:14 off assists from Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Evan Bouchard made it a 3-1 game with his fifth goal of the year at 11:20 off assists from McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins. The third period saw Edmonton with a 9-6 shot edge and a 2-0 advantage on the scoreboard to secure the win. Nugent-Hopkins extended to a 4-1 lead with his third goal of the playoffs at 3:25 off assists from McDavid and Bouchard. Evander Kane closed the scoring with his fourth goal of the postseason at 13:04 off an assist from Draisaitl. Stuart Skinner made 14 saves for the Oilers, who outshot the Canucks 27-15, in the win. He’s likely the man in the crease for this contest as well.

Vancouver Canucks Try to Prevail on Home Ice

Vancouver struggled in Game 6 of the series as they were unable to generate much in the way of high-danger offensive chances, sending them to defeat on the road. The Canucks now look to pick up a home win here to advance to the conference finals. Vancouver is 10th in the league in goals per game as they put up an average of 2.58 goals per contest in the playoffs. The Canucks are 8th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 2.75 goals per game. Vancouver is 12th in the league in power play success as they convert 15.2% of their chances with the man advantage in the postseason. The Canucks are 6th in the league in penalty killing as they have successfully navigated 82.5% of their shorthanded situations this postseason.

When push came to shove in Game 6, Vancouver was flat offensively and was unable to contain the Oilers, sending them to defeat. The Canucks saw the shots even at four in the opening period and skated off tied at one after 20 minutes of play. After falling behind 1-0, Nils Hoglander tied the game with his first goal of the postseason at 10:03 off assists from Elias Pettersson and Filip Hronek. The second period saw Vancouver outshot 15-4 and outscored 2-0 to trail 3-1 at the second intermission. In the third period, the Canucks were outshot 9-6 and outscored 2-0 to wind up with the loss. Arturs Silovs made 22 saves for Vancouver, who was outshot 27-15, in the loss. He’s expected to get the start between the pipes for this contest.

No team has won back-to-back games in this series, which doesn’t bode well for the Oilers. Vancouver has held a one-game lead three times in the series only to see the Oilers even things up on all three occasions. This is one of those situations where the pressure is on the stars, which means McDavid and Draisaitl in particular. Edmonton has dropped two of the three games in Vancouver in this series after losing both meetings during the regular season there as well. If Vancouver generates the chances that we saw in the series prior to Game 6, they should be in good shape. Skinner bounced back nicely in Game 6 after being pulled in Game 3 and sitting the next two contests. Still, he’s been shaky in the postseason and it’s tough to have faith in a guy with an .822 save percentage in the series. Silovs hasn’t been stellar either at .879 but gives the edge to the Canucks as they advance.

Prediction: Vancouver Canucks +120

Rating:

Edmonton enters this game having seen the under go 46-42-5 in their 93 games on the year. The Oilers have an average total of 6.50 goals per game this season though that number drops down to 6.13 goals per contest on the road this season. Vancouver has seen the over post a 46-42-6 mark in their 94 games on the year. The Canucks have posted an average total of six goals per game on the season. That number drops to an average of 5.92 goals per game as the home team this year. We saw the first three games of the series wind up over the total but Games 4 and 5 went under the number while Game 6 was a push. Lean toward this one being another defensive struggle that keeps things under the total.

Prediction: Under 6
